An exoneration occurs when a person convicted of a crime is later found to be factually innocent. This can result from new DNA testing or other new evidence uncovered after the conviction. For crime victims and survivors, these cases can cause confusion, fear, grief, and feelings of retraumatization and revictimization. All of this can be made worse when victims and survivors do not receive timely or sufficient information and support during the exoneration process and around the release of the formerly convicted person.
These videos share the personal stories of other crime victims and survivors who have been directly impacted by these cases, offering peer understanding and support. Please be aware that these videos involve deeply emotional content, including graphic descriptions of crimes.
To protect the privacy of these individuals, the videos are password-protected, and access to these videos must be requested. Misuse of these videos is strictly prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to, publicly sharing or using the footage for any purpose other than as a support resource for victims and survivors, attempting to gain access through the provision of information, or any other use not intended by this website and the OVC-funded project.
In 2017, the US Department of Justice’s Office for Victims of Crime awarded a grant to Healing Justice, in partnership with the National Center for Victims of Crime and Video Action, Inc., to improve post-conviction services to crime survivors and murder victims’ families. These videos were created under Cooperative Agreement No. 2017-VF-GX-K032. The opinions, findings, and conclusions or recommendations expressed are those of the contributors and do not necessarily represent the official position or policies of the U.S. Department of Justice.
Healing Justice provides direct support and services to victims and survivors in cases that involve post-conviction claims of innocence, an exoneration process, or an exoneration and release. Healing Justice is a national nonprofit organization committed to addressing the post-conviction needs of crime victims and survivors through direct assistance, individual and group peer support, and other opportunities for healing. In addition, Healing Justice provides technical assistance and training to prosecutors, police, judges, and other professionals to ensure that victims’ needs and rights are protected in these cases.
